TARIKI SAWMILL SPORTS,
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Favored with perfect weather, there was a large attendance at the first Tariki sawmill gathering, which was held on Easter Monday in Mr. Karalus' paddock, Tariki road. As was to be expected at a sawmill gathering the sawing and chopping events created considerable interest, which was increased bv the presence of such well known champions as A. E. Sullivan, A. Carlsen, Voltzke and Bilski Bros. The handicap' pers, Messrs T. V. Simons and T. Gardner, had accurately guaged the merits of the competitors, and the finishes were very close. The. running events were also keenly contested. One of the best items on the programme was the steeplechase, over a very stiff course. This resulted in a popular win for a young runner named f. Sehreider, who ran with great judgment and staying power. The horse-jumping event caused good competition and some fine leaping resulted. The winner was the black gelding, Otus. well ridden bv his owner, Mr. W. Russell. Mr. L. 'Harrison's chestnut was second. The jumping of Mr. J. Tippler's ronn was much admired. The iports uassed off without a hitch, a result due to the admirable management >i Mr. J. P. Bilski (the secrctarv) and other officers. Messrs 0 F. Young, as starter, and T. In the evening? a very successful social and dance was held in the ball, w&ioh was filled to overflowing. Mr. 0. Simons acted as M.C. and excellent music was ru'ovided bv Miss McDonald and Mr. A. E. McDonald.
