The money saved by thus relieving them would pay the third man's salary. The medical oilicer would be the Board's representative in all matters connected with the professional administration of the hospital, having the treatment of patients, medical and surgical; the control of the annexe and drugs, dressings, surgical instruments, etc.; advisory matters in connection with the hospital organisation and administration; the instruction of nurses and probationers, practical and theoretical. The assistant surgeon would have to act as consultant, operation assistant, and anaesthetist in the hospital as required; to act as locum tenens in the absence of the medical superintendent; and to assist in the 'instruction of the nursing staff. The extra medical officer would have the 'professional control of the Old People's Home, the treatment of out-patients in receipt of charitable aid. pathological work in connection with the hospital, and he would also have to act as locum tenens in the absence of the assistant surgeon. The superintendent would have to be relieved of the work in connection with the X-ray apparatus. But Dr. Leatham had consented to carry on this work at a small salary. The Board adopted this scheme, and decided to offer the position of medical superintendent to Dr E. A. Walker, at present assistant surgeon at the hospital; and to offer the post of assistantsurgeon to Dr Wyllie; and that of extra medical officer to Dr Home.
