HEAVY DAMAGES AWARDED. By Cable.—Press Assoeiation.—Copyright Received March 24, 7-45 p.m. Sydney, March 24. The jury awarded' Captain Strachan one thousand pounds damages against the Herald. The Chief Justice, in his summing up, said it did not matter how fair a newspaper was in opening its columns to two disputants, and in Wie publication of their versions side .)y side. The fairness did not shield news-papers-from an action at law should a defamatory statement be contained in what was published. The Court of Law was the only tribunal given the privilege of statements of a serious nature for and againat.
