WAITARA NEWS

(From Our Own CoiTespondent.) The late Mrs. Rowe, who passed away on Saturday last, was well known in Waitara, having lived practically all her life here. The deceased had beey on a visit to Wellington, and while there had a severe attack of inlluenza, and after a slight improvement was able to return home on Saturday week last. On Saturday she had a turn for the worse, and quietly passed away. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, and was largely attended, persons from all parts of the district being present. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. F. T. Reid. Mr. Rowe and the bereaved young family have the deepest sympathy of their many friends in their sad loss.

About 3 o'clock on Sunday morning a house on the Tikorangi road, owned by Mr. Schultz and occupied by Mr. W. H. Sangster and family, was totally destroyed by fire. Nothing was saved. The building was insured for £2OO and the furniture for £125.

The borough application for the £20,000 loan has been postponed. The State Guarantee Loan Board requires further particulars.

The members of the Waitara Municipal Band returned home on Saturday last from the Wanganui contest. Although not prize-winners they put up a very creditable performance. The conductor (Mr. McConnell) is very well satisfied with the Band's accomplishment considering that the Band beat some of the old-established bands. He reckons that if the Band keeps up the same rate of improvement during the next few months as it had done during the past six months, it will be in good form for the contest at Palmerston North. There is one pleasing feature about the Band, it was the only band from Taranaki that relied on the efforts of its bona fide members.
