ESCAPE FROM GAOL
RESOURCE OF A HOUSEBREAKER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, JTonday. A man named Joseph Powelka, who has been in the Palmerston gaol awaiting trial on charges 01 housebreaking and removing furniture, escaped from the exercise yard on Saturday by using an upturned bucket to scale the wall while the warders' backs were turned. Powelka found a bicycle in an adjacent yard, and he rode off. A man answering to his description aroused a storekeeper at Bunnythorpe at midnight on Saturday and purchased some food, but has not since been heard of. The police are scouring the country for him. SHORT-LIVED LIBERTY. Paimerston North. Last Night. Powelka was captured at Awahuri this afternoon. NO ATTEMPT AT RESISTANCE. Palmerston North, Last Night. ' Powelka made no attempt at resistance when caught, and was handcuffed and brought into Palmerston. He had slept out on the road on Sunday niglit. He appeared before the Magistrate this afternoon, and was remanded to Wellington.
