THE SOUTH POLE.

THE GERMAN EXPEDITION. VERIFYING A THEORY. By Cable.—Press Associa tion.—Cppyright Received March 13, 5.5 p.m. Berlin, March 12. First Lieutenant Filehner, interviewed, said he did not wish to jump the claims of the Anglo-Americans. He would leave the route to the rivals. Lieutenant Filchner's object is to verify the theory that the Antarctic land consists of two islands diveded by an arm of the sea. ( It was previously cabled that members of the British Geographical Society said they deprecated First Lieutenant "Filehner s proposed German expedition irom the Weddell Sea (Atlantic) via the South Pole to Ross Sea (Pacific), and his intention of devoting his £ region where other expeditions have planned routes. As was pointed out when the first news of the German project was cabled, "the German plan of attack from the Atlantic side is only a variant—if a variant—of the scheme outlined in the first place by Dr. Bruce, subsequently approved by Sir E. Shackleton, and adopted in the main bv the United States in connection with the •projected American expedition." It has been stated that a "high personage" (probably the Kaiser) has anonymously given £15,000, and others "nave ?iven £3OOO. towards the cost of Lieutenant 'Filchner's undertaking.
