TURF TOPICS. ; (By "Moturaa") A goat' day's sport is promised at the Opunake meeting on Thursday next. The Napier Park and Masterton autumn meetings open on the same da}'. Sports will be pleased to hear that Bob Baiiow lias Golden Loop quite well again. Jockey E. Hatch has had the extreme pleasure of piloting the last three winners of. the Jackson Stakes. Boxei Tahmv Burns, whom Nigger Johnsiiig got all over, runs his horses under his proper name—Mr. Noah Brusso. Quaintly uncommon, isn't it? Cleniu'a was not a paying investment for punters at Dannevirke, but they can't <?: pect to rakt in sheliels every time! The Nursery Handicap' at Warwick Fnrm (Australia) on the 26th ult, was won by Blackpool, a Maoriland-bred two-year-old by Birkenhead —Idea. A net' dy named Spring Chicken won a race m Australia the»other day. He scored on a "foul"! Notice it? The parties who had been saving lip for a g:>od bet on Captain Bell let themselves gc on Wednesday, but a shocking start upset the pot and the favorite could not even struggle into a place. These 'morals" again! Next to Lord Soult, the greatest bargain in horseflesh, winning just now is the th-ve-year-old filly Milan, who only cost hn : present owner 120 guineas, and lias this season landed three Cups and some reputedly "torrid" wagers attached thereto, Referring to the all too numerous bookmaker in the Empire City, an exchange states:—One infuriated beermerclifi/'l got so tired of trying to break through the wall of bookies in his pas-sage-wiiys that he posted notices everywhere warning the irrigating public to beware of "bookmakers and other thieve-.'' Next! With only a brace or runners in the hack' hurdle race at Dannevirke oil Wednesday the public cheerfully laid "odd?-on" Windage. and had the mortification of seeing their "soft snap" blown out badly bv the outsider, who won verv comfortably. When a man can't nick tile winner of a two-horse race it-

Uatlu-r a quaint story is told by "Mortwi" in connection with Celerity's Oakleigr. Plate victory. A Flemington trainer fancied his own horse, and asked Mr. Cornoily to work a commission tor him. Ci imolly expressed his willingness to oblige and promptiy laid theocus uj the aitount himself, and planked the money on his own horse, Celerity, who beat the other trainer's neddy by half-a-dozen iengths. Celerity may not be a chaiupion. but he always wins when his owiier "goes nap," so no more could be "wished for.
The army of punters who were unlucky to lose their shekels over Sandstream at Wanganui followed it up this .week, oiul were rewarded by a couple of wins Dannevirke. The dividends were not very corpulent, it 'S true, bu.t they were "dry" bets and very acceptable in. these hard times.
Mr. T. Morris, of Marton, lias been served with a w'rit for the recovery ol the racehofse' Marton or its value, which is put .down' at £3OO. The value of horses these days is just whatever you have a .fancy to put it down as. At Stratford recently various witnesses assessed 'he value of a neddy at amounts, varying from £5 to ££s; and at Christchurch the defendant' in a maintenance ease was reputed to own a trotting stallion worth £l5O. "He's not worth more than a fiver" protested Uk> owner. "Will you take £5 for hiin now?" jerked out the pl'tiuHfTs lawyer. The horsey one was rather taken aback, but he was understood to decline to do business at his ow!" figure. To all of which hangs an evic'ent moral. I'll leave it to you. l The presence of the stallion Malster, ■which fhould really have been spelt Maltster, is responsible for a branch of racehorse nomenclature which reads like a brewery advertisement. First we had Ale— it wasn't too bad, either. (I mean the horse Ale, of course.) Then the flood came: Malt King, Barley Water. Beverage, Malt Queen, Barley Brew, '"ager, and goodness knows how many other "beery" names which make anything but "dry" reading. Prads wita names like those should be 'favorites every time. Tlie man who was munching the ham sandwich tells how the Newmarket was won:—Mala got away in front (munch); kept ir. front (munch); remained in front 'munch); and won In a walk (munch) ; that was the end of it! (And of the =ni'l>vv'h. too.V
The unlucky Truganini was on the job again on Thursday, but had to put up with second berth to Sandstream. The'latter horse won the big race each day, anc, strange to say, filled the role of runner-up in the same events last yfear. Luck runs in cycles, but it seems to dodge 9ome sports very consistently. If mv Tnglewood friend is to be be•lieved, +he ex-hurdler Gunstock has at last st -uck company which he ean paceit with The old "screw," together with his noble companions, is harnessed securely to the Inglewood-Tarata coach.. The most that can be said of it is that J Gimst"r-k has -struck a "stiddy"jo^o. Stratlimoira; Hermia, Toanga, and Marton were all well-fancied-ortes' who failed "on" Wednesday hut scored; on the followif'tr dav. The qUartrtte'haye Keetf l showing up very consistently since .Christmas, and thfcir victories weTg deserved!-;- popular.

Conr- ->rning Maoriland horses across the TV.man Sea, latest Sydney files state tKnt Bobrikoff aiy' Downfall are training on well; that old Phaetonitis, now 14 years of age, has been put into training asrain; that Gold Thread is in good condition for Randwiok engagements; and that trainer D. J. Price has the hurdler Maui in work again, and tlie New Zealand-bred jumper is looking very well.
