GAME SHOOTING.
PROTEST AGAINST CLOSE SEASON. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, Last Night. A large deputation waited on the Hon. D. Buddo this afternoon to endeavor to get him to reconsider his decision to make .the coming season a close season for all game. Mr. E. W. Payton, president of the Auckland Acclimatisation Association, said it was the desire of the last conference of societies that each •district should have the right to sav whether a season should be close or open, as conditions varied so much. At ■the present time game was more abundant in Auckland than it had ever been. The fact that last year over £SOO worth of game licenses were sold showed there was plenty of game. Farmers were pro testing against the quantity of game, Especially quail, which were doing a tremendous amount of damage, and if the season were a close one they would haw to resort to poison. Another point was •that the closing of the season would not result in any diminution in the quantity of game shot, and the only ones who would suffer would be the legitimate sportsmen.
The Minister, in his reply, said Tie personally was not responsible for the season being closed. His in'rormation was that arame round about Auckland was not plentiful. However, tlir matter was not closed, and if he had evidence that there was a plentiful snnnly of frame, it could he reopened, and the Governor could he recommended to grant an exemption. At present the evidence was conflicting.
