LORD KITCHENER'S REPORT. MR MASs»EY : S VIEWS. By Telegraph.—Press' Association. Auckland, Last. Night. Mr Massey, interviewed in regard to Lord Kitchener's report, says lie thought it would be a serious mistake, to go beyond the expenditure contemplated by. the Defence Act, or to illcrease the age for military trainiiu'. Sir Joseph Ward estimated the cost •/ Lord Kitchener's scheme at £470,000 pi / annum. To that had to be added £k)o,000 as subsidy to the Imperial Navv and interest and the sinking fund in connection with the Dreadnought were, estimated at £150,000; say £750,000 in all. He did not think the' Dominion could afford that at present. As to the proposal to increase the age for military training, Mr Massey said: "I am sure this would al;'o be a mistage. ~la . people do not look favourably on compulsory training up to 27; we increased the age to 2(5, as suggested, there will be a dislocation of eerta. 1 - industries, and consequently trouble and for one I cannot agree to the proposal."
