A London cable states that King Edward has arrived at Biarritz, the French watering-place.
Messrs. M. G. Williams and H. J. Price .will be the Taranaki umpires in the cricket match Australia v. Taranaki. A Wooclville wire states that at a meeting of the Pahiatua Licensing Com mittee yesterday a cordial farewell was given to Sergeant Cruicks'aank, who has ibeen promoted to Xapier. Prior to his departure to Napier Mr. H. R. Robinson was presented by the members of the Civil Service Football .Club with a silver-mounted pipe. Mr. Addison, in making the presentation, referred to the keen interest Mr. Robinson had taken in the club's welfare. Mr. Robinson suitably responded. Major W. Mordaunt Edwards, V.C., arrived in "Wellington on Tuesday from London by the Rimutaka. Major Edwards, after passing through Sandhurst, joined the 74th Highlanders, and served in the Straits Settlements and Hongkong. He was in Egvpt in 1882, being present at the Battle of Tel-el-Kei>ir, where as a lieutenant his bravery earned him the Victoria Cross. He dashed alone into a oatterv, killing the commanding officer. He was knocked down, and but for the arrival of three of his men, must have perished. Major Edwards was in India from 18S4 to ISSO. For five years he was adjutant of the 3rd Battalion Highland Lisht. Tnfantry. Ho rotted in November. 18f)0. and three later was appointed to TT.M. Honorable Corps of Gentlemeu-at-Arms. Ma. «ior Edward? is accompanied bv Mr«.
