There was a poor attendance mst night at the public meeting convened by iiis Worship the. .Mayor lor the purpose of devising some method of suitably celebrating the anniversary of the province, lite .Mayor, Mr 0. tlxh, presided. Tin l Mayor, in his opening remarks, recalled tli.it last y<ar, when t.ie oltf scrvance of Anniversary Day was revived, there was a very enjoyable reunion at Mot in oa. This year ue had expected to mc a very large gathering of Oddfellows at New Plymouth, out it lad been decided not to hold tnat pfcnie until November next. This had been readered necivsary by the fact that the I'.isier no(lii;!ys came very early "th's year, and it would clash with the Anniversary Day functions. On this account his idea, was' that the programme would not be so elaborate as he .'tad thought. He expressed his regret that ithe attendnnc was so small, but lie felt sure that the people generally were 'e sirous of the holiday being observed. So he would move that steps be. taken to celebrate the anniversary of the province, and that a committee lie i>ct up to make arrangements. Mr W. D. Webster seconded. Mr F. C, Bell ringer had no doubt that a committee could easily hring about quite as successful and enjoyable a gathering ns was held 1 last year. The motion was carried • The chairman suggested a seaside, picnic. His idea was that in the veterans' big luncheon marquee there should bo separate tables for the survivors of the arrivals by the early ships, the "William Bryan," "Amelia Thompson" and fio on. "He had no doubt that the young ladies would see to that part of the nrogramme. He suggested that it might iie advisable to hold the function at the Hemii, where the East End Bathing Committee would place their various conveniences at the disposal of tho promoters. Mr Fletcher, secretary of this committee said that his committee authorised him to offer every assistance in tho event of "The Pines"' being selected tor tho function. It was decided to hold a seaside picnic at the East End. Upon the motion of Messrs O. W. Browne and Webi-ter, the offer of assistance from the East End Committee was accepted with thanks.
