THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE
tfILUXG THE STRIKERS' TLACKS. By Telegraph.—Press' Association. Auckhinu, Last Night. To-day there were eight slaughtermen at work at Southdown, all of them nonunionists who have applied for work in place of members of the union now on strike. Yesterday the two men «ho were taken on in the morning worked all day. and went hack with the larger gang to-day. While the new men are not°doing work as fast as the expert hands now on strike, they are handling sufficient sltock to keep the works running with a much diminished output. Two more applications for work were received to-day. and the men were duly engaged, and it is expcted that other men will l>e available w;hen the farmers have had time to send them alon» in response to the telegrams despatched to them. No efforts are, now bein* made to brine -about any rreonciliation between the company aiid the strikers with a view to the latter resuming work, as it is believed a sufficient number of new hands will be obtained to fill the strikers' places.
