A CHRISTCHURCH TRAGEDY.
SUICIDE AND ATTEMPTED MI'KDEK. By Telegraph.—Press A.-sociai '•■ Christcluirch, Last Nignt. .7;iiiio- Frederick Trengrove, a casual labourer, residing in Queen street, >ydenliain, committed suicide at his house this morning by cutting his throat with a razor after he hud made an attempt to murder his wife with a tomahawk. Trengrove was casually employed on the railway, and for some time, past nad not lived at all happily with his wife. Me had been on a drinking bout, and went home drunk ou Saturday night and created a disturbance. Yesterday Mrs Trengrove went to the Court and instituted proceedings for a summary separation order, and this morning it is stated another quarrel ensued. She informed her husband of her intention to apply for an order, whereupon he became violent, picked up a small tomahawk and struck her a blow with the edge on the hack of the head. She was knocked down, but a little later recoverd -sufficiently to run out on to the street, where she began streaming "murder." The police were informed, and a doctor who had' been telephoned for arrived ju-t a few moments after the police officials. Trengrove was alive then, but died shortly after. Mrs Trengrove in the meantime was attended by neighbours, ard removed to an Adjacent house. Her condition, as far as can be gathered, is not thought to be serious.
