The Economist says it is evident the Admiralty is convinced of the superrority of oil fuel for certain purposes. The difficulty is the necessity of depending on foreign sources. The British Empire produces only eight per cent of the | world's petroleum. Burnias, India, Borneo, Canada, Trinidad and Barbadoes are all capable of immense future yields. In Australia and New Zealand, if ac-, counts are true, there is enough to. keep Great Britain fully supplied. Australasia is' too far away to be an efficient source of supply for British industrial purposes, but just what is needed for maritime purposes. It is absolutely necessary to be able to replenish storage tanks from sources under our control. THE TARANAkTeEtROLEUM CO. AN INQUIRY FROM ENGLAND. On Monday the chairman of directors of the Taranaki Petroleum Company received a cable from London, asking JtE comW would sell out its rights, plant, etc. and, if so, at what price.
