L , RELF'S DEPARTURE. Auckland, Last Night. E. Relf, the well-known cricket coach, left by the main trunk express this evening for Wellington, where he will join the Ruapehu for London. Seen oefore his departure, Relf stated that unless extraordinary pressure was brought to bear he would not be seen in cricket in Auckland again. He had promfsed to go to India, but was in' hopes that his services' would not be required until after next winter. ELEVEN OR FIFTEEN. "A would-be rep." writes:—Having lately noticed several suggestions m' your columns with regard to the han-1 dicapping of the Australian team about to visit New Plymouth, I beg leave to offer you a few suggestions in that direction% In the first place I should suggest that all the Thursday miu .Saturday players, exclusive of the Veterans,, should be allowed to bat against the! Australians. But the selector should be allowed to use his discretion in obtaining a sufficient number of men to; field, at the same time providing for u contingent of noted "catchers" to be j placed around the terraces. In the sec-1 ond place I should propose that, when' the Taranaki team is batting, the pitch should, be lengthened to 44 yards, s'o as to enable the tricky bowling of the visitors to be spent over the last twentytwo yards of the pitch before reaching the' batting crease. A special set of boys' wickets, not to exceed six inches, should als'o be used when our men are batting. When the Australians arc batting, six" wickets, each three feet in height, should be nlaced at each end of the pitch, the length of which should be reduced to eleven yards. If under these conditions the Australians begin scoring at the rate of 50 runs in ten minutes, the firebell should be rung and the Riot Act read.' Everything must be done, at whatever cost.' to prevent the Australians from wrestin" from us' the "ashes" of Mt. Egmont. "•:TWS!P!
