CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly mooting of the Clifton ■County Council wis held at Waitara on l'riday. There were present: Councillors Foreman (in the chair), Julian, Kennington, Mclvenzie, O'Sullivan and Sander. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Leave of absence was granted Cr. McGuinness, who is at present in the Hospital. The chairDla A> on behalf of the Council, expressed sympathy with Cr. McGuinness in his illness, and hoped he would make a speedy recovery. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer reported as follows: Waihi Riding: West and Sarten were forming up portions of the Inland North road preparatory to metalling. The riding surfaceman having tendered his resignation since the last meeting, applications had been called to fill tne vacancy. TiEorangi Riding: D. Paul had completed the supply 01 spawled stone under his contract, and tenders were called for the carting of same. West and Sarten lad completed forming up West's Hill ready for metalling. On the 21st -ult. Messrs Tate and Hill, the two delegates from the Taranaki County Council! were met at the Tikorangi suspension bridge, and the original proposals for Tepairs, etc., were generally agreed upon, and the preliminary work was already in motion. Application had been made for the original grant for the Otaraoa road, amounting to £25. Ngatimaru Riding: Andrews and Crozier had to date put out 420 yards of gravel on the north end of the Junction road, and were now engaged in completing the south end. Topping had been engaged in putting down metal opposite Baxtfer's on the Otaraoa road. Langman had. hauled out 150 yards of boulders on the Oapui road and was now engaged in breaking same. On the Pita road, near Pratt's, the bridge required immediate repairs, and arrangements had been made to have the timber cut and repairs effected at a cost of about £25. At Purangi, Pennington had completed his original contract and was now engaged upon" tie additional 'fi've chains. Dowman w.as proceeding ,with his sawing contract for the North Ma tau-bridge. : ' ' Urenui Riding: A portion of the widened road in the; Urenui township had "been metalled as authorised. Coletnan had, so far, -carted out 345 yards, covering a distance of about 61 chains. On the Oltoke • road, a section had been pegged out for metalling, the cost being covered by loan and subsidy. On the Kakia road arrangements have been made for expending the small Government grant by day labor. Mokau Riding: James and Co. had finished putting down the metal under their contract, but had some backing up to do preparatory to its being passed. , The metal had, in the engineer's opinion, been put down far too flat. It should be rounded,up at once and tnu middle width blinded. The crushing for •the maintenance metal was now proceeding, and. 136 yards had been put .down, but the late rains had given the ..works a set back. On the Mangamaeho .rciad the bridges were inspected and the various deck coverings were to receive | attention. He 'suggested that the bridges- be now allowed to rot out withj out further repairs and be built later 1 with more permanent materials. Beli shaw Bro>. had already burnt one kiln : of papa and pronose burning another kiln at onee to fulfil the quantity speeij fied. Proposals had been made to exUpend the Government grant of £SO on 1 this work. The section of road opposite i the 3(ltli mile pe;r is now laid bare to I the fascine foundation. This should bo 1 preserved by some permanent covering, ' preferably mirnt papa. On tlip Okau j road Schmidt was progressing with his | sandinsr and repairs, and further work j had been authorised to be done under Government ?rant. Arrangements had also been made to expend the Govern- . ment grant on the Tvtangatoro road as I soon as such is available. On the Pnkej aruhe road D. Paul had commenced , miarryina and expected to be ready for i the cruslie,- 011 its return from Uruti. NOXIOUS WEEDS.
R. E. Fairfax-Chalmorideley reported that he was taking steps to have the ragwort at Tarata complained of by the Council eradicated. The question o'i the ragwort and blackberry on the native land at Mimi, Urenui and Tikorangi was brought up, and it was resolved to draw the attention of the Native Reserves' Agent to the noxious weeds growing under his supervision in the county. TENDERS. Tenders were accepted as follows: Supply of 500 yds metal at Tikorangi, E. Richards, 3s lOd per yard (to West's Hill), Is 10d to Tikorangi school: 285 yds metal Opoke road. Piripi, Ss Gd per yard (accepted subject to authority of Roads Department). The re-erection or the Purangi creamery as a surfaceman's residence was left with the engineer to arrange. Two tenders were received, but were considered too high. GENERAL. A warrant was received from the Government vesting the Tarata bridge in the Clifton County Council. The Whangamomona County Council wrote approving of the Council's decision in holding the matter oi county boundaries open for a few months. Messrs. Allen Bros, drew attention to the state of the Pukemahoe road, Purangi. and asking that some repairs be done to the road before the winter sets in. They also asked that a culvert through which the water at present declined to run be attended to.—Left in the hands of the engineer. Dr. Ganit reported a case of scarletina in the Pukeho district. Tarata. The 'Minister of Public Works wired that he was obtaining a renort on Mold road. Th° Superintendent of Electric Line*. Wellington, wrote that instructions hid now been given for the erection of the Okau-fterekapa telephone line. Accounts to the amount of £IOO3 fis 3d were passed for payment and the Council rose.
