"Liverpool to New Plymouth!"—such is the announcement made in regard to a sailing vessel that was to have left Liverpool at the end of last month for New Plymouth, an<f is possibly on her way here now. The improvement of the harbor, perfect security afforded by the breakwater and a good depth of water, together with the commendable enterprise of a number of Taranaki merchants, has prompted the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, to charter the sailer Viganella to leave Liverpool for New Plymouth direct. This announcement is of great importance to Taranaki, marking as it does the commencement of a new era in regard to trade with oversea ports, this being the first vessel to go on the loading berth in Britain for New Plymouth. Should this enterprise be successful it is not unlikely that further charters will be made until such time as the harbor works have progressed to enable the Home steamers to make this a regular port of call. The Viganella, ' which, under ordinary conditions, should arrive here during May, has the very satisfactory cargo of 1200 tons, chiefly made up of manures, salt and general merchandise.

THE ROSAMOND. The Rosamond has had a busy time since she arrived in port on her last trip. On Friday she trans-hipped 120 tons of cargo to the Corinna, and discharged 500 tons of cargo for New Plymouth. On Saturday she loaded close on 3000 crates of cheese for transhipment to the Ruapelui at Wellington, besides a small quantity of general cargo. She sailed for Wellington in the evening. THE CORINNA. The Corinna, arrived from Onehunga last evening. To-day she loads dairy produce and sails later for Wellington and South Island ports. In connection with the report that the Maliinapua, of the Union Company's fleet, is to be converted into a coal hulk, a Melbourne paper remarks that she is probably the first twin-screw steamer in Australasia to end her days in this undignified slisguise. The paper further adds that she lVon? of the oldest twinscrew steamers afloat. The shoal which was supposed to exist off Waitara was not located by the ITinemoa after an exhaustive search. The shoal was reported by the captain of the small steamer Kanieri to the cap. tain of the Home liner Kaikoura, and although bearings were given, the Hinemoa was at work all day on Thursday without finding any indications of a shoal. Th'; water was very clear, and the man on the look-out was aible to see the anchor on the bottom in 10 fathoms of water, w.hich was the least depth shown by the soundings where the shoal was supposed to be. This is flic second time the shoal has been reported. The Union Company's cargo steiamer Waitematn. which left Auckland for London on January 1 with a cargo of wool, laden wirier the auspices of the Shaw. Savill and Albion Co.. arrived at her destination after a passage of 40 dav». Upon discharge at London the Waitemata will enter upon a series of charters, which will probably detain her from Now Zealand waters for some months. Her first commission is to load gencrnl cargo at Glasgow and Antwerp for Turret Sound ports. The cteamer will (ben load a part cargo of lumber at Pngof Sound for Fiii. and on her war rtown will shin fiflO or 700 mules at San Francisco. al=o for Fiji, to b« delivered to the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. OVERSEA VESSELS TO ARRTVE AT WELLINGTON. From London— Paparoa (due about 6). sailed on i -Trnuary 10. via Auckland. (N.Z. Shipping Co.) Rimutaka (due about March SI sailed on January 20. Plymouth January 22, via TenerifTe, Capetown and Hobart. (N.Z. Shipping Co.^
