HOMING
OPENING OF SEASON 1910. The first race of the season, for young birds, flown under the auspices of the New Plymouth East Flying Club, eventuated yesterday afternoon from Eltham, a distance of 28 miles. The weather conditions were unfavorable for fast times to be recorded, a north-east wind interfering with the progress of. the birds, causing them to deviate considerably to the westward. The members of the club enter: i strongly for the event, nine memb is nominating sixty-three birds, the re-.,1t of the race being as follows:—W. 11. liouiton's "Mahnra,"' I hi'. Turin. 40sec., 1; W. <:ieeson's "Red Tips,'' lh. lmin. 45sec., 2; H. Arnold's" "Sunshine." lhr. 3min., 3; James Bros.' 'To Roti," lh. 4y s min.. 4. On Saturday last the club held n "trial" from Kltham, 54 birds being liberated bv the stationmaster at 10.'',0 a.m. The birds had to contend with ft strong north-east wind and heavy rain over the whole distance. The fi'st birds homed at 12.15 p.m., and all othors homed in reasonable time, the member# considering 'h ■ result satisfactory, considering the adverse circumstances met with. The next race will lv flown from Waverley on Thursday.
