FRANKLEY ROAD PICNIC

The annual picnic of the Frankley road factory suppliers was held on Mr. Lander's property yesterday afternoon. •There was a very good attendance, despite the fact that it had been postponed from last week, and the enterprise of the committee in making the picnic more open this rear was well rewarded, as a considerable number went out from town. The large committee, of which Mr. Leighton was chairman and Mr. A. E. Sadler secretary, all did their work well. The racing was interesting, and finishes were close, fully justifying the selection of Mr. Englefield as handicapper. The greasy nig did not give a very good run, being easily caught, but he made up for this later on by escaping whilst being weighed, and it was only after considerable exertion that he was ultimately run to earth in a neighboring pumpkin patch. The tea-tables were nicely arranged under the shade of some beautiful native btislj, and the ladies' committee (Mesdames Leighton, Sadler, Tippins, Englefield and Miss Leighton) were most assiduous in their attetnion. The catering was done by Mr. J. W. Thomson, of New Plymouth. The results of the races were as follow: 100 yds: 11 Brock 1, D. Smith 2. High jump: D. Smith 1, Lander 2. Long jump: Preatney I. 0.
