Clarke, two members of our local rifle club, travelled to New Plymouth last week to compete in the Taranaki Rifle Association's meeting. Both secured several prizes. Mr. Jenkins has gone on to compete at Trentham. The Cape Egmont Horticultural Society's show, which is to be held on ■Tuesday, Ist March, promises, if waather permits, to be an advance on last year's. Settlers in all parts of the district will be glad to learn that Mr. Arthur Corbett. who has been very ill, and who had to be brought home to his parents' place, is now able to get about again, although he 5s still very weak. Mr. A. Alexander took away a large mob of cattle and sheep from his War J a beach 'farm last week. I understand that the Government -again intends to put men on the Cartington road. When this road is opened through to the Tvahui road from the Newall road, settlers will 'be able io drive their stock through in a great deal less time, besides giving the cattle easier "going." Settlers are now able to drive from the Newall roivl through to the Oxford road, Okato, by the Carrington road. TARATA. About a hundred settlers of the Ta«rata district met at the hall on Friday evening, when a social- was held to say jtarewell to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and their family, who were about to leave the district. But for the unfavorable weather the hall would have been crowded, as Mr. Johnson and his family are exceedingly popular in the neighborhood. Dancing, interspersed with songs, constituted the main programme, {but after supper a presentation of a handsome clock, suitably engraved, was made to Mr! Johnson, a gift from the settlers in token of the esteem in which ,Mr. Johnson and his family are heid. Mr. Rice made the presentation on belialf of a committee of settlers, and in doing so, said that Mr. and Mrs. Johnson had been in Tarata 21 years. Twenty-one years ago Tarata was a forest without roads or bridges, the great change being largely owing to the energy and industry of . the old settlers. Mr. Johnson was a pioneer, not only in Tarata, but in Taranaki as well. Just B0 years ago he was sworn in as a solj dier, and was at once sent to the front. In his very first action he was wound- | ed, but continued in the fighting line to J the end of the battle. He took part in ■. twenty general engagements and in in'i numerable skirmishes, amTJushes and j dangerous duties, aiwavs doing his duty well and noblv, earning the rank of | lieutenant. Though a slight hitch had ! occurred in Mr. Johnson's arrangements | for leaving, yet, .whether he left, or j whether he stayed, his friends and ' neighbors wore glad of this onportunj ity "of giving expression to the kind feelings they had towards him and his | family. j Mr. Johnson, in a few well chosen ( I words, returned thanks to his frienlsi and neighbors who had met that evening to do him and his family honor. J Be wa« sorrv to sav a hitch had ocenr- ' red in his arrangements, which he .had heard of only a short time before the meeting. ' Three cheers were given for Mr. and | Mrs. Johnson and 'family. During the | | evening songs were sung 'by Miss I). I !.Guilford. Master D. Patd'son.and Messrs j I. Crowe and J. Johnson, which added much to the enjoyment of the even-' ing. ECZEMA CURED IN LESS THAN A WEEK. PROOF POSITIVE AT NEWTOWN. People who ave disfigured with Eczema need not despair. Listen to what Mrs. i Jane Robinson, of 3, Commodore-street. Newtown, Svunev, says in respect to her case. This lady removed a patch of Eczema four years old by means of one week's treatment with Rexona. "Rexona Ointment removed a patch of Eczema from my face in less than a week in a manner-that was positively startling. This patch of Eczema was very unsightly, and really I, was ashamed to go out of the house. This Eczema had been on my face for about four years when I started to use the Rexona. I had tried all sorts of omtments and other remedies, but all without any effect at all. After a few applications of Rexona, however, the irritation was much decreased and the Eczema scabs began to come off, leaving new skin underneath. The improvement kept up day by flay till all the scabs were gone and a perfect new skin appeared where the disfiguring Eczema , formerly was. The wonderfully speedy cure Rexona Ointment effected has asI tonislied and delighted me." Rexona, ' the new skin remedy, is sold only in triangular pots at Is (Id and 3s. Obtainable at Bullock and Johnston's. I agents, Devon street, New Plymouth.
