Monday.—Fifty men en- i gaged in discharging cement from the j Union Company's steamer Wanaka dis- ! continued work on Saturday because j they were not allowed to us? hooks 'n J handling the bags. The Wanaka has 500 tons of cement on board, and it is estimated that 200 tons were discharg- I ed on Saturday before the men refused to continue work. To-day a conference between the Union Company's manager, the officials of the Wharf Laborers' Union, Mr. P. Halley (Conciliation Commissioner) and Mr. D'. McLaren, M.P., and the company's shore foreman took place. The result was that an arrangement was arrived at whereby the men should return to work on the understanding thnt there were to be six men in each gang instead of four, and that as soon as the Wanaka's cement cargo is discharged a conference is to be held to decide wlut practice (hooks or no hooks) shall be allowed in future. When the decision was known the men objected to go back under the circumstances stated, out eventually the necessary number was obtained. Some feeling was displayed by some men inasmuch as sixteen had offered to do 1 the work of discharging with hooks or* the understanding that any man who tore a bag should be discharged.
