A strong effort is being made to promote a sports meeting at New Plymouth on Easter Monday and an adjourned meeting of the Caledonian Society is to be ""held in the Town Hall this evening to elect officers and to adopt a programme. As a number of the champion amateur athletes of the colony have promised to attend from Wellington, several amateur events are being included in the programme. It is to lie hoped there will be a large attendance of all interested in athletic sports, as without a more marked local support than has been accorded of late, it will be impossible to carry on with any hope of appreciable success. The March issue of "Life" just to hand is noteworthy for its extra Australasian flavor. To begin with, there is a stirring article by T. K. Dow, Agricultural Expert and Journalist, pointing out how Canada was made by the magic phrase, "Wheat Will Grow," and drawing attention to the fact that for every bushel of wheat that Canada can grow, Australia might produce one thousand. One of the most interesting portions of Mr. Dow's article deals' with the studbreeding of wheat, and shows the evolution of such famous varieties as tion, Dart's Imperial, and Wallace. A map' diagram shows the area over which there is a sufficient rainfall for growing wheat, the total land alienated from the Crown (about 122,000,000 acres) and the acreage at present under cultivation for wheat (about 5.000,000). In addition. Life has, of course, its' usual well-filled departments covering many phases, and the March issue is one of the best of this excellent magazine.

The following is the advice of George Hackenschmidt, the Russian Lion, to the Rotorua Maoris: "Yes, you are very good and very kind; but if you want to be a strong people you must work with" your head and develop your body. Fat, I tell you, I tell everybody, is as dangerous as <-' in and kills sooner. But to have everything right, every muscle just responsive—ah, it is good life and great fun." A Victorian importer of horses who left "the Bluff on Monday with a consignment for Australia 'informed the Otago Daily Times correspondent that Clyjlesdale heavy draught colts and fillies are in good demand, and that there is every likelihood of the market remaining firm. The bot-fly, supposed to have been introduced from New Zealand, is taking firm hold of the place. His observations are that in New Zealand the horses have become immune from the pest, and,"seemingly, sustain no great inconvenience. In Victoria, howeyer, the case is differeTTt. There its ravages are serious, but there are hopes' that in time the fly will prove inocuous, as in New Zealand.
In giving juugment in a case of Breach of the drivers' award one dav last week, Mr. E. McCarthy, S.M", made what he called a few general i> . marks on the attitude of some employers and workers towards awards. He said: "For weal, or for woe, industrial matters and industrial disputes have been for the most part broug'it under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Arbitration Court, whose awards, where .lawfully maTe, have the force of law. •Tot we find a not inconsiderable num,ber of employers and workers, although ,both are represented on the Court, engaged in more or less ingenious at-
tempts to evade their duties and obligations, an<f when a breach is sheeted trowfe thereTs almost invariably a still mofe ingenTouT'expTaiiation made, with a'view of reciucing the penalty—an explanation, be it noted, which, when offered seriously, oftentimes presupposes that the occupant of the Bench is ,blessed, or cursed, whichever you will, with a very low order of intelligence. •For the future, unless explanations are .« little less disingenuous, penalties will be increased."
