THE ATLANTIC-AUSTRALIAN SERVICE,

Melbourne, Last Night.—Mr. Ross, Canadian Trade Commissioner, has received a cable from Ottawa confirming the announcement of the inauguration oi a steamship service from the Atlantiee ports to Australia and New Zealand by the Canadian Government. The chief loading ports will be Montreal and St. Johrfs" {New Brunswick). It is understood the successful tenderers arc the Zealand Shipping Company. Christehurch, East Night—Regarding the cable as to a Canadian subsidy for a regular steamship service between JSttefitie ports and Australia, last year the Imperial Export Co., having representation at Auckland and Christehurch, jcMuTated a petition among business .jnen arid" leading importers in New Zealand, advocating the service and urging the Canadian Government to grant a .subsidy. The petition was forwarded ta Ottawa with the-result that the subsidy was granted. The company have guaranteed to provide sufficient ca'-go for eight 5000-ton steamers annually, and it is understood the New Zealand Shipping Company have secured the contract to furnish the steamers ior the service.
Sydney, Last Night—Arrived, at 3 p.m., Wimmera. The Rosamond will not leave Onehunga for New Plymouth until 2 o'clock this afternoon, and will not leave here until Monday.
The Kotuku, going north this after.noon, carries a mail for Auckland.
