THE DOMINION DEFENCES.
LORD KITCTTEXKH'S INSPECTION. FIELD OPERATIONS AT CIIIUSTCIIU RCII. PRAISE FOR THE CADETS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchucrh, February 23. The enemy took u>p a position on a plateau above Halswell and entrenched themselves there with a field giro, and the main body had to extend over the hills, locate the enemy and drive them from the entrenchments'. Lord Kitchener and staff and Sir Joseph Ward watched operations from the upper hills. The men worked excellently under the blazing sun; the batteries shelled the plateau, and under cover of this fire the infantry advanced and captured the enemy's guns and carried the position. The manoeuvres were all over by 11 o'clock. The local cadets are in high fever over Lord Kitchener's appreciation at their appearance at drill at yesterday's parade. Lord Kitchener, while inspecting them, was obviously delighted. Frequently he exclaimed, "Good! good!" THE MOCK BATTLE AT HALSWELL.
WHERE BLANK CARTRIDGE IS USEFUL.
Christchurch, Last Night.
Lord Kitchener is reported to have said that at the first attack the force entrenched at the quarry would have been wiped out in actual warfare, although the second position was most strongly held. Lord Kitchener left for Wellington to-night and was accorded a hearty send-off.
