TURF TOPICS. (By Moturoa.) Dunedin Cup Day. Races at Woodville and Dunedin today. The Newmarket Handicap will afford punters a chance to lose money on Saturday. North-East is coming on, and should be just cherry-ripe at the Wangauui meeting. That good horse, California, who went wrong immediately he heard the price his owner refused for him, is again m work at Hastings. Southern scribes say that Stayboy >s very well and will run well in hurdle events at the Dunedin meeting. George Price has Boanerges in great heart, and Highden's s_printer is frequently named in Wanganui "doubles." From Hawke's Bay comes the information that Zimmerman will never survive another preparation. Trainer J. W. Lowe's team for Dunedin includes Effort, Sea Queen and Ti\inui. The trio are reported well, and will be ridden by W. Ryan in their engagements. Tawhaki has done practically no work since going to Otago, says a Dunedin writer, and McCombo is not expected to ask him to gallop at the Dunedin meeting this week. Dick Johnson took Clemora to Woodville on Monday, and the St. Clements horse may not be long in winning again. Bay Paul did not gr down. Wimmera, who is being schooled by F. Cress, is jumping very well at Hastings. On the strength of Taranaki Cup form AVaitapu will just about start favorite, •for the Woodville Cup to-day. Uhlando is very well treated in the Wanganui Cup, and with a smart boy in
the saddle miirhc ii:;.- \o be reckoned wiih. Oid staler. Jolly Fri;:,. won a hurdle riici' at Invercnririll reci'iulv and has siiown a iiking for iejipnig. lie figure.-, in hurdle races ai Duiiedm. C. O'Neill has tin- hunlior Windage hi. a forward condition for Woodville eit- 1 g.igcmeiirs. That disappointing horse, Kaiwhaki.j has been sold to an Auckland sportsman I And will probably race in unregistered I ranks in future. Woodhey won the Woodville Cup last ! year with 7.9, but has 8.8 in to-day's j race. i . Trainer W. Shechy has Brilliancy audi Appolmaris going well at Wangan.ii, nnd they should be quite ready for the Wanganui meeting. Kora won a couple of races in good style at Riccarton last month and is a' likely starter m the Champagne Stakes at Dunedin.
Howler showed fair pace at Stratford | and will be given a chance to distm- ! guish himself at Woodville in the Maiden Plate and several hack handi-| caps. j If Himitangi can jump smartly he I should not be long in scoring a win as he figures at the minimum in forthcoming hurdle events. On Taranaki Cup showing Waitapu and No Trumps may be worth watching in their next tew races. f Nine horses remain in to-day's Dunedin Cup, Husbandman (9.7) being topweight. Effort figures in the same race.' Clemora is engaged in two handicaps at Woodville to-day. In the President's -Handicap, r un over seven furlongs, the son of St. Clements is set to carry »9st 41b, and in the Telephone Handicap, five furlongs, his weight is Bst lib. Judging by Hawera and New Plymouth running, R. Johnson has the horse very well. ,
It is amusing to notice the number of "well-informed" scribes who are busy congratulating Mr. Percy Johnson upon .his training of Clemora. For their .information it may be well to point out 4 that Clemora is trained by Mr. "DicV Johnson at Lepperton. The .Publicans' Handicap, at Dunedin, generally draws some fair performers. To-day's field includes Flitaway (8.13 and All Guns (7.7), who ran up well .at Riccarton recently. Hermia was very short of work wn.m she won at Foxton the other day, but las since put on condition v/onderfully and is a very fit mare at present. Mr. R. McDonald has sent her to Woodville, together with the 3-year-old gelding Ascalon, who is described as the fin-est-looking racehorse in the Dominion. Ascalon started at Foxton, but ran greenly. I
Iranui carries 9.11 in the Stewards' Welter at Dunedin. The Wellington horse is a very consistent performer and is faced all over the country with' spells a very long way apart. It is wonderful how some of these . horses keep going. I believe certain persona living adjacent to the racecourse are lifting their delicately manicured hands in holy horror at the idea of racehorses working on Sundays. Perhaps they think that horses, because they are raeehorses, should be locked up in their stables 1 and get no exercise at all on the Sabbath. , Exercise is just as necessary tor horse as for man, and what harm there is in a gallop on a Sunday morning is very hard to locate. A bit of a gallop would: do the fault-finders themseUfs no harm—even on the Lord's Day. A great many people have opened their mouths about a certain horse that was supposed to win, but was not goou enough, last week. The winner in consequence paid a false price. That is right enough as far as jt goes, but do?s it go far enough? As a matter of fact, tons of money were sent .away for the "corect thing, and the "saltpetre" was! unanimously declined by the bookmakers. The wires carried the tal? of disappointment back to the course and it is ten to one that the "ready" was not "ready" at all; that the "correct pea" wasn't too anxious under the "circs.," and that none of the other runners! knew anything about the plan that failed and in consequence were completely nonplussed when tiie "one that was . wanted" failed to show up, and, in fact, ran absolutely last. That is a likely supposition, and perhaps it is not very far wide of the truth. Just think it' over! I
