DEATH OF BISHOP LENIHAN
DURING A VISIT TO THE NORTH.
By Telegraph.—Pres* Association. Whangarei, February »2. Bishop l.enihaii, who was on a visit to Whangarei, died in bed early this morning at the Roman Catholic Presbytery, of syncope. The bishop arrived here on Saturday from Auckland, and conducted the opening of a convent boarding school on Sunday, and a c.oiffirmation service and mass. The bishop yesterday visited Maungakaraniea and held a confirmation. Last night a social gathering was held in his honor at the Presbytery, dispersing at half-past ten. During the evening the bishop complained of ill-health, but there was nothing to indicate such a serious state. Auckland, February 22. Bishop Lenihan, head of the Roman Catholic Church m the province of Auckland, was found dead in bed at Whangarei. Dr. Darby, his medical at- ' tendant, states' that the cause of death was heart disease. HAD BEEN MEDICALLY WARNED. Auckland, February 22. I The announcement of the death of Bishop Lenihan was received with widespread "regret. He was in the Domain on the opening day of the AustralianI Auckland cricket match. His intimate I friends knew he had been suffering i lately, but, as usual, he was jovial and , [ hearty in manner. Many of his friends, I however, were ignorant of the fact that I I lie had been warned by his' medical adviser that his end might come at any i time. Auckland, Last Night. On arrival in Auckland early to-mor-row morning the body of the late Bishop Lenihan will be embalmed* and then be taken to the Bishop's Palace, where it will lie in state until Thursday evening and then be taken to the Cathedral, i where it will remain until Friday morn- I ing, when the funeral takes place. The office of Vicar-General (at present held by Monsignor Gillan, of St. Benedict's) dies with the Bishop. Archbishop Redwood, Metropolitan of New Zealand, is now in charge of the diocese. He will appoint a deputy to administer it until the new bis'hop is appointed. Under the ecclesiastical law nothing can be done in the direction of appointing a new bishop until a month's time has elapsed.
(Dr. Lenihan was born in London in 1858. He was educated at the Benedictine Monastery, Ramsgate, and the English College at Valladolid, Spain. He was ordained in 1882, and accompanied Bishop Luck to Auckland. He was curate of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Sacred Heart Church at Ponsonby; rector of St. John's, Parnell; and manager of St. Mary's Orphanage, Ponsonby. He succeeded Bishop Luck in 185)7, being consecrated by Bishop Grimes on November 15th of that year.)
