Seven thousand tramwaymen at Philadelphia gave an hour's notice and struck, alleging that seven hundred of their comrades had been unfairly dismissed. Two hundred and ninety-seven cars were wrecked and many others burned. Women participated in the disturbance, with the result that two girls were shot during the progress of the riet. . The Riot Act was enforced, and the police were strengthened by 3000 extra men.
