Hon. J. Carroll, Native Minister, wa» a passenger to Wellington by yesUrday's express train. Mr. Robert Fletcher was yesterday elected chairman of the Wellington Harbor Board.—L'ress wire. . His Excellency the Governor, who has been paying a farewell visit to Nelson, leaves there for Wellington to-day. Mr. F. W. Moore has been appointed lieutenant of the Waitara school cadet*, in succession to Lieut. Wilkins, who has left the school. A Press cablegram received this morning from Sydney states that the Rev. Prescott has been elected president of the Methodist Conference. Superintendent l<\ C. Bellringer, of t*u New Plymouth Fire Brigade, hae been elected a vice-president of the Fire Brigades Accident Assurance Society. On Saturday last the Hon. G. Fowlds, Miss Fowlds,'Miss Mills and Mr. Crowe (private secretary), made an ascent of Mt. Egmont from the Dawson's Jfa'ls house. Mr. John Townley was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Gisborn'e Harbor Board yesterday. He has been a member of the Board since 1885 and its chairman since 1890.—Press wire. Mr. F. A. Bates, of the teaching staff of the Hawera District High School, has accepted the position of lirst assistant at the Feilding District High School. Mr. Bates will leave Hawera in about a month's time. Some sixty or seventy of th? patrons of the Red House Hotel, and personal friends of Mr. Frank Hammond, spent a social evening last evening in honor of Mr. Hammond's approaching marriage, .and presented him with breakfast, tea and dinner services, about two hundred in all. At Monday night's parade of the Hawera Boy* Scouts (reports the Star), a large number of parents took the opportunity of showing their appreciation of the services of the Scoutmaster, TAt. Brunt, at the late Christmas camp on the Pater river, by presenting him with a handsome travelling rug and a goldmounted brush and comb in case. . Mr. E. de C. Clarke, M.A., M.Sc, Assistant Government' Geologist, who has been engaged for some time on a geological examination of this district, n.i» resigned from the Geological Survy Department, and has been appointed demonstrator in biology and geology at Auckland University College. He leaves to-night by the Rarawa to take up his new duties in Auckland. As yet no one has been appointed by the Government Geologist to carry on Mr. Clarke's work in Taranaki. Surgeon-Major Dr. Carbery, of Stratford, will be on the Medical DirectorGeneral's staff during the important military manoeuvres to be held in Wellington in connection with Lord Kitchener's visit. Surgeon-Captain Home, of New Plymouth, will be associated with Dr. Carbery in the control of water supply, sanitation and food for the troops, and both the Taranaki medicos will be. closely attached to the headquarters staff. ' Mr. F. B. Gardiner and Mr. F. N. Fussell (each of whom holds non-com. rank in the volunteers) will accompany Surgeon-Major as staff orderlies, with special duties in connection with sanitation.
