A recent order issued bv the Union Companv forbids any officer, while on ■watch, from communicating with any passing vessel unless the captain is on the bridge. The reason given for Chi* edict is that the officer on watch is liable to become too engrossed in the lamp signalling, and thus neglect proper attention to navigation. This would more or less endanger the vessel. The officers who have been in the habit nf practising with the Morse lamp on every possible occasion so as to "keep in form" 1 are now giving less attention to practice, as they do not care to call up the captain merely for the sake of exchanging signals with another boat. Officers are consequently losing their skill with , the Morse code, as practice is esssntial to maintain a reasoname knowledge of i the system. Lately a man-o'-war tried I to communicate a message to one of the I Union Company's passenger boats, bat I through neglect of practice by the offil ccrs of the latter steamer the message from the cruiser could not he rend. It : is suggested by masters and officers as an alternative to the new regulation that the officer on watch may simplv call up an extra A.B. on the bridge to keep a sharp look-out for a few minutes while the Morse signalling is effected. This would obviate the necessity of troubling the captain. Th? Morse lamp is a valuable equipment. ■which should be available for use wh?n emergency requires.—N.Z. Times.
