COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Carterton, Fridav. _ At the Magistrate's Court this morning John Walker was committed for trial on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of G. W. Deller, with intent to commit a crime. Bail ■was allowed, accused in the sum of £3O and two sureties of £SO each or one surety of £IOO. FALSE PRETENCES. Auckland, Friday. A young m«n who gave his name As Sidney Stevenson was arrested on a charge of obtaining money by the Bale of mining shares, which he did not possess. Representing himself to be John Burridge, of Nelson, he sold to S. White and Co. 500 May Queen shares and received £ll2 fls in cash. Representing himself as H. R. Duncan, of Nelson, he sold through Messrs. Mowbray one thousand ' Watchman shares, and asked for a cash payment of £S9Os 4d; but th e brokers insisted on paying by cheque, and nuspicion being aroused, payment was stopped. When arrested accused had £OO in his possession, ftis solicitors stated that he .would plead guilty, and that restitution would be made of the money received by accused. « The prisoner was remanded on bail in two sureties of £SO each. A FEMALE THIEF. Dunedin, Last Night. At the Police Court Martha Basan, an attractive yo»ng woman, was charged with a series of thefts from private houses, hotels, and private hotels ef goods of the total value of over £54. Three of the thefts were committed' at Woods' Hotel, the Coffee Palace, and the City Hotel. Watches, ' bracelets, rings, blouses and petticoats all> served her turn. She actually slept in one private house in the absence of the occupants on holiday, and was caught there by a young son of the owner. There were eight such charges against her, and she pleaded guilty to all, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. When arrested, *'he was wearing some of the stolen jewellery. Other articles she had pawned. Another charge of theft is pending against the accused. . ALLEGED MISAPPROPRIATION. Chri.-tchurch, Last Night. At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court to-day Frank Reed, alias Frank Deer, one time treasurer of the Lyttelton Pirates Amateur Athletic Club, was committed for trial'on a charge of having converted to his own use £O2 17s Od, the money of the club.
