VICTORIAN RAILWAY ACCIDENTS
DEFECTIVE BRAKES. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Melbourne, February 18. At the inquest concerning the victims of the Beaufort railway accident, driver Montgomery deposed that on the day of the accident he took the engine, to which the accident was due, from Ballarat to Geelong. He found a leak in the airpipe and plugged it. Then the brake worked perfectly. He reported the defect in a book at Geelong. After the accident he examined the book, and found that the entry had been removed. In connection with the second narrow escape from an accident at Beaufort, it was stated that when the car left the rails the passengers and two guards jumped off, the guard putting the brake hard on first.
