THE RAILWAY FATALITY

THE INQUEST ADJOURNED. An inquest concerning the death cf Emile Eugene Fromont trom injuries received in an accident in the Ne*v Plymouth railway yards on the sth inst. was opened in the Courthouse yesterday. Mr. I-i. S. Fitzherbert, S.M., District Coroner, presided, ana the following jury was empanelled:—AVilliam N. Ewing (foreman), Charles &. Baker, Arthur 11. Herbert, Arthur Ambury, Harry C. Evans, and Joseph Asher. Sergeant Haddrell conducted the enquiry, Mr. T. S. Weston appeared for the Crown, and Mr. A. R. Standish for the driver and fireman of the engine concerned in the accident. The Coroner informed the jurymen that it was not now necessary for them to view the body. That was done by the Coroner, relieving the jury of an unpleasant duty. Sergeant Hartdrell intimated that after calling evidence of identification of the body he proposed to ask for an adjournment until such a date as was suitable to the gentlemen engaged at the enquiry. Anthony Arnold Balsam, assistant shunter in the railways, deposed that about 10.55 a.m. on the sth inst. he was engaged in shunting. About that time an accident happened, as a resjlt of which train-examiner E. E. Fromont' was found under the guard's van of a goods train made up ,to go down the I line. Witness gave formal evidence of the identification of the body. Sergeant Haddrell stated that this was all the evidence he proposed to obtain from this witness at present. Balsam's evidence would be taken more fully at the later sitting of the enquiry. The inquest was adjourned to 9 a.m. .on Friday, 25th inst. Sergeant Haddrell stated that a large number of witnesses i would be called, probably including j some officers of the Railway Depart-1 ment from Wanganui. I
