STRATFORD NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, February IGth. Several rinks from the Stratford Bowling Club are visiting Eltham u>.rnorrow. A match between the Hawera and local croquet players was played at Stratford to-day. A large number of local residents at.teiwicd the races at New Plymouth today. Several lawn tennis matches are to eventuate to-morrow. The W.Y..VU. Club play Eltham, and the Stratford X-lu-b meet St. Andrew's. I understand that the South TaraCricket Association have appointed a uelegate to confer with the Northern I Association in regard to the amalgamation of the two bodies. In the interests .of cricket throughout the province it is to be hoped that the conference will lead to the union of the two divisions. I regret to hear that Mr. 11. LI. Befcts | has been indisposed during the last few I days and has been confined to his house, At the last meeting of the Borough Council it was decided on the motion of Cr. Young—"That in order to enable .the Council to keep pace with the required advancement of the borough and with a view to more economically carrying out the various works required a committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Ward, Masters, Healy and the mover be appointed to report as to the advisability of raising a loan to defray the cost of such permanent works." This is opening up a big question. There is no doubt that it is impossible to mamtain the streets and form or make newones out of the present ( revenue. If the progressive policv is to be continued two alternative present themselves—first, to increase the rates so as to augment the revenue; second, to raise a loan. If this as well as other municipal questions -which are agitating the publis mind is to enter into the Mayoral campaign, the election for the office oi chief magistrate should be an interesting one.
