STORY OF THE CHANZY DISASTER

Rodel, the only survivor of the wreck of the mail steamer General Chanzy, on the coast of Minorca, was asleep when the vessel struck. A terrific explosion followed, and everyone, including the officers, was panic-stricken. Women and children, without clothing, rushed on to the decks, and the waves washed them into the sea. The steamer sank in three minutes. Rodel, whilst unconscious, was washed into a cave. Subsequently he recovered, and built a breakwater of wreckage outside. Later he climbed the cliff. The body of a woman, almost nude, and clasping a baby, was washed ashore in a cask. The drowned include many French soldiers and officers. . ANOTHER OF THE VICTIMS. Received 15, 9.15 p.m. London, February 15. . The Chanzy's victims included Henri Knust, foreign traveller for Ruston and Proctor of Lincoln.
