ANNUAL CONTENTION. By Telegraph.—Press Associate Invercargill, Saturday. At the Women's Christian Temperance Union convention yesterday the financial report showed receipts to be £332 12s Od. and the expenditure £245 0s 7d, leaving a credit oalauce of £B7 2s lid. The sum of £2302 12s bad passed through the local treasuries during the year, leaving a total balance of £Ol5 0s Bd, each union showing a credit balance. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss McCombs, Xew Zealand treasurer. The report of the unfermented wine department, supplied by Mrs'. Gaskin, of Greymouth, showed that the Nonconformist churches, with very few exceptions, used unfermented wine at communion, as did also a few Anglicans. The report of Miss Powell, Dominion organiser, showed that since the beginning of the work in July she had travelled 4207 miles and visited 41 different localities in the interest of the work. The organiser was reappointed. Reports on Press work and Bible in schools were read and adopted, a discussion taking place on the Nelson system in regard to the latter subject. The purity report was presented by Mrs. Webb, of Ormondville Much literature had been circulated and addresses given to girls and women. One union had been formed, and the vigilance committee had rescued a number of children from immoral surroundings and taken charge of them. Girls had also been rescued from houses of immorality and placed in respectable positions.
