ATHLETICS.
lhi> ocal .\,natcur Athletic Club is an Xl onsy awaiting definite notifieati-.ni from Vvellmgton ft,atM. Ward has be,,, chosen to compete at the chammonsMip awtmg at Auckland on the 20th. While it is to bo regretted that Ibe elub did not send Ward to the provincial ehainpionship meetim- at Wellington last week to show h7s eapahiliti,*, that fact cannot be urged against his selection, as the club informed Wellington that all expense would ce borne locally. Entries tor the championship close oh the 16th, so no time can be lost in completing the arrangements. Unless the centre'shows a much •stronger desire to encourage new clud* amateur athletics, w liidi are just getting a hold in Taranaki, will soon drop back into oblivion from which they have just been resuscitated.
' Two or three running events for amateurs will be contested at the electric light sports to-morrow night. Big lields arc expected for the cycling events tto-morrow evening.
