A MONOPOLY REFUSED.

In connection with the claim by the De Beers Diamond Company against the British South African Company, claiming, under certain agreements', all the diamonds found in Rhodesia, Mr. Justice Swinfen Eady, in the London Chancery Court, gave judgment, declaring that the agreement giving De Beers an exclusive license to work the diamondiferous ground in Rhodesia was void. Judgment was for the Chartered Company, without costs. COLONIAL WORKS OF ART. London, February 11. Canada and South Africa, are arranging to send pictures by local artists to the Empire Festival. The' council is awaiting Australia's action. CRIMINAL LIBEL TRIAL. London, February 11. The trial of T. W. Cros'land, assistant editor and director of the newspaper Academy, is proceeding, on a charge of criminal libel concerning the Hon. Henry Maimers-Sutton. Extraordinary allegations were made of attempts by Lord Alfred Douglas, proprietor and editor of the journaJ, and Crosland to borrow money to finance the Academy, refusal of - which was followed by the accusations of immorality against Mr. Sutton.' AMERICAN SUGAR DUTIES. New York, February 11. The National Sugar Refining Company has paid £120,800, making a total of i£700,000, in settlement of Customs duties on unweighed imports. A MORGANATIC MARRIAGE. London, February 11. The Daily Mail's St. Petersburg correspondent says the Czar is furious at his brother's morganatic marriage, with a lady who has been thrice divorced. THE "BROWN DOG" MONUMENT. London, February 11. The Battersea Council has decided to return to the donors the Brown Dog anti-vivisection statue, after having it watched night and day for several years.
