DUTHIE CUP COMPETITION

To-day thp first round for the Duthie Cup, competed for annually by representatives from Wanganui, Wellington and Hutt, of which clubs the donor has at different times been a member, w«.s commenced. Hutt Eas held the cup since it was first presented three yeavs ago, and this is the third contest for it. Hutt drew a bye and Wanganui nvt Wellington. An interesting game followed, the teams being equal for the first_ fifteen heads. Then Wanganui drew' away and eventually won by seven points. Wellington and Lower Hutt tied in the aggregate, and a playoff was necessary. This gave rise to a remarkably close game. The excitement was very keen when the Lower Hutt' ring, skipped ny Mr'. Orton Stevens, carried off the game by one point. Lower Hutt has now to play Wanganui in the finale. This match was commenced last evening, but eight heads remain to be played.
