ATHLETICS.

SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES. By Telegraph.—Press' Association Wellington, L:>st Niglit. The Wellington provincial amateur ■athletic championships were held on Saturday and produced some remarkable performances. Woodger won the 100 yards' in lOsec. dead, and the 220 yards in 22 2-5 sec, less than the New Zealand record time. Woodger's performance will in all probability be submitted Ito the council to be passed as a new record. The 440 yards was won by J. Wilton in 52 seconds. Wilton is at present New Zealand champion. J. F. Wilson, a new runner, was the only man lout in the half. He was' paced by two men, who took a lap each, and cut out ' the distance in lmin. 58 4-ssec,. only three-fifths off the New Zealand record time. T. B. Hegger, who has been running only a few weeks, having been rowing all the season, ran away with the mile in 4miu. 20 4-osec. The throe miles event went to H. T. Thompson, holder of the Australian record over the Marathon distance, in 15min. 53 3-ssee. A. Evenson won both hurdle events, beating G. St. Keddell. Evensen covered the 1120 yards in IG2-ss'ec., and the 440 yards in 63 3-ssec. The mile walk resulted in a great surprise, the New Zealand champion, P. J. Fitzgerald, being ! badly defeated by a hitherto almost unknown man, D. Cashman, in the remarkable time of Cmin. 38 4-ssec. The veteran Leslie turned out and walked beautifully, but the going was too solid for him. In the three miles handicap, Fitzgerald was hopelessly out of it, and r-e tired, Cashman winning easily. Evensen kvon the high jump at sft. si/,in., and jF. C. Hubbard the' long jump'at 20ft. Bin. G. P. Anderson's winning throw in the hammer event was 100 feet. There Were over 3000 spectators, including the Governor and Lady Plunket, and the' sum of over £l4O was taken at the gates, enabling the Wellington Centre to be strongly represented at Auckland on the 2Cth at the New Zealand cliam-' pionships. The feeling is strong here that Wellington will have no great difficulty in wresting the provincial premiership shield from Canterbury, the present holders. g-- ,,r '.
