ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION.

THE AMERICAN PROPOSALS. VIEWS OF SIR E. SHACKLETON. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received 6, 5 p.m. London, February 5. Sir Ernest Shackleton says that Commander Peary's starting base will be 200 miles more northerly than Captain Scott's. He doubts if the Americans can land, because the regions are unknown. The Americans, he says, are further handicapped by having to journey over quite new ground, whereas Captain Scott will traverse the rouxc within 97 miles of the Pole. Mr. Griffiths Taylor, a Sydney-ite and graduate of Cambridge, has been appointed geologist to Captain Scott's expedition.
