The Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting opens to-day and will be concluded on Saturday. The first race to-day Ts timed to start at 1.30 p.m. Fair acceptances have been received for the Gisborne meeting, which takes place to-day and to-morrow. A profit of £7OO was netted over the Rangitikei Gup meeting. The Foxton annual gathering brought in £4OO. With fine weather the Taranaki J.C. ought to top both at the autumn meeting. It transpires that Crueinella had a very bad passage in the W#llingt.m Cup, being galloped upon, and her hocks
still show signs of the scrimmage that took place. I After witnessing Trentham racing 1 many wise punters pub a tick against Osiris as a likely one to follow. The good thing may materialise shortly. Lady Reina, who showed a good turn of speed amongst the two-year-olds at Trentham recently, is a full sister to Merriwa (Merriwee —Lady Helen). She will be given a flutter at Riccarton this week. Corazon is going well and should win «gain shortly. He is a consistent old prad. It is stated that trainer J. McCombe may settle down in Wanganui, which is a most convenient spot to train horses for dozens of meetings within a fc v hours' rail of headquarters. Waiari was very hot for the Zealaadia Handicap at Takapuna on Saturday and the Taranaki horse won all the way. It was a cakewalk! The Foxton stewards got on the warpafh last week and made several prominent horsemen sit up sharply. Tn consequence of a braw' in the jockeys' room, C. O'Neill, V. O'Neill, W. Young and A. Attwood were fined £5 apiece and the matter was reported to the Wanganui Jockey Ciub, For breaking tlie Rules of Racing by riding Waitoto in the January Hack Handicap when Envoy, a horse trained by him, started in the same race, J. Morris was fined £5 also. And then the air cleared! Ilorsee trained by T. A. Williams won five races at Takapuna on the opening day. Sir Artegal, Waiari, Madam Soult, Leo and Peggy Pryde were the ones to score, while Tanekaha, another of his charges, ran third in the Cup. Tanekaha ran a good race in the Takapuna Cup and was always near the leaders, eventually finishing within a length of Uranium and Wauchope, who fought out a stirring finish. Unfortunately Tanekaha pulled up lame and may not sport silk again for some time. Sir Artegal was in front all the way in the Stewards' Handicap and won easily by three lengths. By a streak of bad luck the chestnut suffered injuries to a leg during the race and will lie numbered amongst the missing for a few weeks. Mr. J. F. Muelianan recently disposed of Fireglow T to Mr. S. Nettlefold, and together with Mar tyre the pair will enter D. J. Price's stable at Caulfiei.l. Marty re should be more than useful amongst the ponies over that way. Rangihaeta ran last all the way in tlie Orewa Hurdles at Takapuna and does not appear to be benefited by the northern climate.
The Canterbury J.C. summer meeting is generally reckoned a Clifford "benefit," and bearers of the blue and gold jacket will be much in evidence this afternoon. "Roosevelt Villa," Wanganui, was ?n fete on Monday night when the stork brought Mr. Albert Jackson a bouncing son and heir, and many were the congratulations sliowered on the popular horse-owner. Tikitcre has been responsible for a few good gallops at Riccarton recently and is in fine trip to contest the Midsummer Handicap. Weights for the Wanganui Cup and Flying Handicap are due to appear on February 12th. Fasnakyle easily accounted for j?- 1 .! Guns over five furlongs on Tuesday and lias been doing very well on the tracks. Strathmoira and Debonnaire, who luve been winning races lately, are likely starters at Karioi. Belario is looking the picture of health and is striding out nicely in his Work. He should be just about cherry ripe oy the time the Wanganui autumn meeting rolls round. Silkweb ran a close second to Equit.is in the City Handicap, run at Trentham in lmin 14 3-ssec., and the Canterbury horse is still possessed of a good dash of speed, as mav possibly be proven before the Canterbury meeting closes. . Gravitation has not been up very long but is moving well. Whether h- 1 can see out the Craven Plate to-day nr not is the question, but it seems hardly likely.
One English writer asserts that while Frank Wootton is possessed of marvellous power for his size, beautiful hands, the head of an old man on h's shoulders, and knows no fear he indulges in the dangerous practice of screwing in the saddle to sec what is doing behind him, while on various occasions he h-n* lost races bv trying to take impossible chances on tlie inside rails which might have been obviated had he taken a little widor berth. Even with these little defects, however, Wootton is admittedly a marvel for his age. Taranaki acceptances are due at i 0 p.m. on Monday, February 7th. Egmont Cup acceptances are due on Friday, February 4th, at 0 p.m. At the same time acceptances close for the Flying TTanuieap, Moivmere Hack Flat. Whareroa Hurdles, Waihapa Hack Handicap, and Ohawe Hack Hurdles. The Haw-era telegraph office closes at 8 p.m.
