ROVERS v. INGLEWOOD.

This match, which was commenced last Thursday on Western Park, was concluded yesterday, and provided the closest finish of the season in local cricket, Hovers, who had a lead of 7 runs on the first innings, obtaining a two points' win. For the losers, D. Clegg played a fine defensive innings of 58 not out, Crombie (19), Pullan (19), and Matthews (17) giving material help towards the score of 141 for nine wickets, at which point Inglewood declared. Rovers started with Weston and Williams. Harris and Crombie bowling. Weston scored freely from the start, and when Williams (11) was out, 40 runs had been put oil. Price (15) and Hasell (25) helped AVeston to put on 23 and 19 for the next two wickets, and when Weston was out for 48, 104 runs were on the board, Rovers, with five wickets in hand, wanting 31 runs to win. iSewley and Hasell put on 14 runs for the next wicket, and matters looked decidedly interesting—--17 to win and four wickets to go. it looked odds' on Rovers winning at this point. But with only 4 runs added, Hasell, Bewley and Clarke were all out, and it was left to Fail-brother and Arden, the last two men, to keep up their wickets. Harris was bowling his best, and .so was Billing, and when the last over was called the situation stood thus'—if cither batsman was out Inglewood got a three-point win; if they Vept up their wickets Rovers won by wo points on the first innings. The eitement was intense, and each ball v -.3 anxiously watched. But the bat bent the ball, and Rovers won a splendidly contested game, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and played out in a fine spirit by both side*. A feat-;.' of the game was young Arden's fielding. It is no exaggeration to say that he saved 30 runs for his side. On the rough ground it was a marvellous performance. He is probably the finest point in Taranaki to-day. The wicket played very well indeed, and with another top-dressing of Long, burn soil next ' spring good and true pitches' may bo looked for. First innings scores were: Rovers 71. Inglewood !i t. The scores for the second innings were as follow:
