WAITARA.

The turning of the first sod in connection with tiie trenching work of the Waitara water supply took place on Friday. The ceremony was performed by his Worship the Mayor (Mr. YT. F. Jenkinb'). who stated that the inception of tiie pipes to convey tiie water to Wnitara marked a.u important epoch in the progress of the town. The idea hail been mooted some conividcrable time ago, but owing to the state of the money market the Council had been obliged to decline the terms their ofi'erj ed. An ofi'er was made by the Spiral Si.eel Pipe tou.pany to lay the service, and. if necessary, to finance it. The terms were accepted by the Council, the result being that to-day they were in a position of being able to turn the first sod of the pipe trenches. He pointed out the great advantage to the town ef a good and efficient water supply.
