STRATFORD-ONGARUE RAILWAY

WORK AT THE RAILHEAD. Our Pohokura correspondent writes' under date l!)th January: visit along the public works as far as the Pohokura tunnel a couple of days ago, and I was very much surprised to see the work that has been done, especially at the tunnel, which is 13 chains Jong. The material is very nearly all out. The overseer told me it would be all out in six weeks' time, and all that will remain then will be to put the concrete in—a work, 1 am told, they intend to have finished by the beginning of June. The permanent rails are laid with a few chains of the tunnel, and the ballasting is well in hand, the engine working close up to Reporua. it should not 'be long before we will be having the engine working at Pohokura. They are getting the Pohokura station yard well in hand, which is going to be rithcr I a big aff'a'ir, the yard being Hi chains long. Of course, this will lie the railhead for some time to come, for they have some very heavy work to do before reaching Whangamoinona, the Whanga tunnel being 30 chains long, and some very big cuttings' and filling to do on the Whanga side. 1 believe tliev intend to start this tunnel almost at once. The works are all in full swing again, the men having returned from their holidays. Boarding-houses and sly-grog-shops are doing a. good trade. The Daily News meets with a ready sale here amongst the workers. R- is generally admitted that it is a really good morning paper, and I expect your local agent j will be sending for an increased supply | now that it is converted into an eight- | pasre paper. ]
