WANGANUI ITEMS. Wanganui, Last Night. Permits for buildings to the value of £48,423 were issued last quarter. The train returns for December totalled £BO7, the .number of passengers carried being 118,005. ENCOURAGING ItOMNEY BREEDERS. Palmerston N., Last Night. E. Short, a well-known Romney breeder of Waituna, has offered the' Manawatu A. and P. Association a cash prize of £IOO, to be competed for at the spring show, for best pure-bred Romney ram shown on the ground, bred in New Zealand, to be shown in wool and to be judged accordingly; then to be blade shorn, and judged after shearing for symmetry; judging to be on points; sheep, thus shown for the special prize not to be debarred from competing in other classes; two judges to be selected by the Romney Breeders' Association, one from the South Island, and another judge to be selected by Mr. Short, wiio has appointed Mr. Alexander McGregor, of Wairarapa. Mr. Short will not himself enter for the competition. 'l'lie oiler was accepted with thanks. The Association has also decided to offer special prizes of £lO each for the champion bull in Holstein, Ayrshire and Jersey dairy classes.
