At the inquest on the death of Donaldson, his son was committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter. Donaldson, a settler near Invcrcll (341 miles north of Sydney), got into debt wagering on a boxing contest in which his son was engaged. Donaldson then attempted to shoot his family, who lived on the son's farm. He injured his daughter, not seriously, and missed his .wife. His son got a gun and exchanged shots with his father. The latter ran away. Subsequently Donaldson was found dead, shot twice in the back. The son was arrested.
