Mr. Hughes regards the breakaway as one of the effects of Mr. Wade's new law, and considers that the whole position" is complicated. They were now 'iiins!, not merely enemies, but those who for sometime pretended to be their friends. The 6trike congress was created at the desire ot the northern miners. The latter had the amplest right to conduct their alfairs as they pleased, but every day they remained out involved other workers, and they must have a voice in the conllict which defied every effi-rt to confine it within the comparatively narrow limits of the coal mining industry. They were now fighting outeide among themselves where formerly they fought inside.

The contractors for the supply »f Newcastle coal have written to the City Council stating that owing to the strike they are unable to supply any more coal,'and asking to be relieved of responsibility ae provided in the strike clauses of the contract. Ton, liitllefair, Williams, Watson, Pease. Sneddon, Neilly, Stcnhouse, Young and Frith, guilty of inciting a strike, each being fine 3 JTlftn, with the alternative of two months' imprisonment.
