Mr. A. Wellcr, managing editor of the Taihapc Times, is on a brief visit to the town. Mr. Louis Bullot, an erstwhile resident of New Plymouth, and now of Sydney, is on a brief visit here. A Wellington telegram reports the death, at the age of 78, of Captain Richard Butt, a well-known coastal pilot.
Mrs. Jane Marshall, widow of the late Mr. James W. Marshall, an old resident of the district, died at New Plymouth yesterday, A Cliristchurdi wire states that .Mr. 11. D. Acland has been elected to the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, vice Dr. Jioorhousc, resigned. One of tile oldest and most respected residents of To Aroha died last week, in the person of llr, Francis l'avitt, civil engineer, who hud been ailing for some weeks.
Mr. W. D. Campbell, of Timaru, and formerly of New Plymouth, who is studying for the legal profession, has received word that he has passed the first section of_ the solicitors' examination, ■vir. Campbell lias not yet been studyiii" law for twelve mouths, and he has succeeded in doing what a great many students fail to do—namely, to pass this examination at the first sitting. Mr. Campbell was a journalist, and was for some time editor of the Timaru Post and the Timaru Herald, and was a candidate for Timaru at the last general election. °
