AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
The exceptionally attractive programme issued by the New Zealand Axemen's Association for their ninth annual grand championship carnival, to he Held on Monday and Tuesday next at Eltham, should'be the means' of drawing a record crowd to this popular gathering. The association has again been fortunate enough to secure the nominations of such famous axemen and sawyers as the Pretty Bros (Dave and Esau), Joe Newstroski, T. West, Sam Johnson, J. Deegan, A. Twining, G. MeCauley, C. Hutton, A. E. Sullivan, 1). Johnston, Volzke Bros., A. Carls'on, and over fifty others that we could enumerate, most of them being men who have won a considerable amount of prizemoney in various parts of New Zealand and Australia. The committee has also been fortunate enough to secure the entries of most of the very best cyclists now racing in the dominion, including A. E. Parkes, K. J. Jones, Birch Bros., and M. McPherson (the latter having won the great Austral Wheel Race in Melbourne in 1908). On the second day of the carnival his Excellency the Governor will be an interested spectator. On the first flay (Boxing Day) a s'pc.iiil train will leave New Plymouth at 0.30 a.m. (the 9.45 train from Wnitara will connect with this special train at Lepperton Junction). On the second (lay there will not be a special from New Plymouth, owing to the fact that a most interesting function, the opening of the Salvation Army Bovs' Home, takes place at Eltham at' 11 a.m. His Excellency will perform the opening ceremony. On I account of this the first event at the . carnival will not start on that day until ■ 12 o'clock (noon).
