THE LONDON MARKET. THE LOW PRICE OF CHEESE. In conversation with the Manaia Witness, llr. Welis, who has just returned from a trip to the Old Country, said it was easy to understand the low prices prevailing for cheese. Holland was now making cheddar and throwing a lot more on the market than formerly, and there were increased outputs from other countries, a tremendous increase from New Zealand particularly, the total being estimated at oyer 20 per cent. The market was glutted with cheese. On top of that, trade generally was bad, as well as the uncertainty of the Budget and tariff reform.
A good many people, Mr. Wells remarked, were of the opinion that the dual plant in New Zealand factories was a great mistake. They argue that a factory should stick to either butter or cheese, and not dodge from one to the other, as no one could accurately predict what the markets of one year would be, and by shifting around a company was bound to be caught. < Speaking generally," Mr. Wells declared that New Zealand butter, cheese and meat were better than the average Home production, but not equal to the la Iter's very best. The average dairy butter from English farms was almost inimitable; but there were some factory brands that New Zealand produce could not squal.
" I was very much surprised," said Mr. AVclls, " how Siberian butter is improving in quality, and the enormous quantity being put on the market, and very little inferior to New Zealand." However, the rivalry with New Zealand was not regarded as serious, because their season was nearly opposite to this country. -
Mr. Wells spoke in high terms of the rourlesy shown him by all the big produce dealers', who at all times went to no end of trouble in opening cases of butter and cheese, and explaining anything upon which information 5 was sought.
